On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at approximately 2pm, Officer Pierre and Officer Calnan were working a road construction detail on College Avenue when they observed a truck veering off the road and ultimately striking a pole. It was apparent that the operator was suffering a medical emergency. Officers Pierre and Calnan, along with Sergeant Cannava, who was working his patrol shift, broke the car’s window when they found the doors were locked. They pulled the man from the vehicle to begin rendering medical aid, which included CPR when they quickly learned he did not have a pulse and was not breathing. Two Athletic Trainers from Tufts University, Brett Hayes and Lauren Bracken, witnessed the incident and were able to provide an Automated External Defibrillator and assist with CPR and aid. Armstrong Ambulance arrived on the scene and transported the man to Mass General Hospital, where he was treated and later released.
The doctors credited the man’s survival to the quick actions of everyone involved.
Whether working a patrol shift, a road construction detail, or even “off-duty,” our officers are always prepared to jump into action to help community members in need. We are proud of all those involved for helping to save this person’s life.
Update 5/30/2024:
Earlier this week, we were honored to share an extraordinary story of a group of individuals who happened to be in the right place at the right time to save Chuck DeVirgilio’s life. Among them were our own officers, Officer Pierre, Officer Calnan, and Sergeant Cannava, as well as Tufts University Athletic Trainers Brett Hayes and Lauren Bracken. Today, we witnessed the heartwarming reunion of these heroes with Chuck and his wife Nancy, just a little over a week after the incident. This reunion is a testament to the incredible bond that was forged through adversity and the deep gratitude they have for one another.
In this moment of reflection, let us celebrate the unwavering dedication of our officers and the selflessness of Brett Hayes and Lauren Bracken. They embody the true essence of heroism and serve as a reminder of the profound impact we can make when we unite in service to others.
May this story inspire us all to remain vigilant, compassionate, and ever-ready to lend a helping hand when fate calls. It also serves as a powerful reminder that every second counts in these critical situations, and it’s important to be certified in CPR!
