We recently had two senior residents fall victim to the “Grandparent Scam”. Please read and share with older adults in your life that may not see this post.
How it Works
You receive a phone call from someone that says they are your grandchild (or a lawyer on their behalf). They claim that they are in trouble and need you to send a large sum of money to help them. They will usually ask for the money as wire, a gift card or even cash. The caller will tell you not to tell anyone and may say there is a “gag order”.
How to Protect Yourself
- Just hang up!
- Never provide callers with personal information (your date of birth, social security number or any credit card numbers).
- Never agree to wire money or purchase gift cards as payment to someone over the phone.
- Always tell someone you trust.
- Report any suspicious calls to the police as soon as possible
If you or someone you know believes they were a victim of a scam, please call us to report it at 781-395-1212.
