How to Become a Medford Police Officer
Step 1: Take the Massachusetts Civil Service Exam
The Massachusetts Civil Service Exam for Police Officer is typically offered twice each year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Registration for the fall exam is now open. Apply today.
Step 2: Prepare for the Exam
Visit the Massachusetts Civil Service website for exam information, study materials, and registration details. Candidates may also email candidate.prep@talogy.com to request an access code for preparation materials.
Step 3: Get Listed
After successfully passing the exam, your name will be placed on an eligibility list. Rankings are based in part on residency status one year prior to the exam date. Candidates may also choose additional cities and towns where they would like their names to appear on hiring lists.
Step 4: Department Hiring Process
When the Medford Police Department is hiring, the Massachusetts Civil Service Unit provides a list of eligible candidates. If your name is reached, you will move forward in the hiring process outlined below.

Conditional Offer Requirements
Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must successfully complete the following:

- Drug Screening
Police Academy Training
Once all hiring requirements have been successfully completed, recruits will attend a full-time police academy for approximately six months. Upon graduation, recruits begin their careers as Medford Police Officers.
