We have been receiving reports of more telephone scams in recent days. In the most recent incidents, residents are being told that their Social Security Number has been suspended because of suspicious activity or because it was involved in a crime. The caller will want you to confirm your social security number. The caller will say that your bank account is about to be seized, but will tell you how to keep it safe. This often involves putting your money on gift cards and giving the caller the codes or asking for your credit card. In our most recent case, the caller stated that money needed to be moved to a different bank account. Remember the Social Security Administration does not operate like this. Also be aware of IRS scams that operate in the same manner. Never give any personal information out to anyone on the phone. We are trying to prevent you from becoming a victim. Again, Never commit to send money to anyone based on a phone call. If you have any questions call the Medford Police Department at 781-395-1212. Thanks.
